A useful range is not the largest one at any cost; it is the one you can repeat with control, an appropriate load, and a clear purpose.

Two people complete ten repetitions on the same machine. One uses less weight and keeps the same range from the first rep to the last. The other adds more plates, but every repetition becomes slightly shorter. Who has really progressed?

The answer does not depend on kilograms alone. Range of motion is part of your technique, the training stimulus, and the way you compare one session with the next. If the range changes every week, your log is no longer measuring the same thing.

This guide from Alphafit Gym Massanassa will help you distinguish a full, controlled range from a repetition shortened by excessive load, and use partial reps only when they have a genuine purpose.

What range of motion means

Range of motion, or ROM, is the distance your joints travel during an exercise. In a squat, it includes how much the hips, knees, and ankles bend. In a curl, it covers elbow extension and flexion. In a pulldown, it runs from the starting arm position to the end of the pull.

“Full range” does not mean forcing everyone to reach the same angle. It means using all the range you can control in that variation, with a stable setup and without turning the end of the movement into a bounce or compensation.

It helps to define two points before you count any repetitions:

  • start: the position from which each repetition begins;
  • finish: the point you must reach without changing the agreed technique.

When those points stay consistent, you can compare load, repetitions, and effort honestly.

Is full range of motion always better?

As a general rule, it is the best starting point. A systematic review and meta-analysis found better outcomes from full rather than partial ROM for strength and lower-body hypertrophy. The 2026 ACSM position stand also includes full ROM among the variables that favour strength development.

The practical advantage matters just as much: a complete, repeatable range helps you learn the exercise, build strength through more of the movement, and identify progress more clearly.

But “full” does not mean “deeper is always better, whatever it costs”. If going two centimetres lower makes your heels rise, your torso position collapse, or pain appear, the extra distance does not automatically improve the rep. Adjust the load, machine, setup, or variation first.

Not all partial repetitions are the same

A partial rep uses only part of the movement. It can appear in two very different ways.

Unplanned partial

You begin with a clear range, fatigue, and shorten it so you can keep counting. This often happens when every squat gets higher, a curl no longer reaches elbow extension, or a pulldown ends farther from the torso with every rep.

It is not necessarily a worthless repetition, but it is not equivalent to the full repetition before it. Counting both in the same way can make it look as though you added reps when you actually changed the exercise.

Programmed partial

You choose a section of the movement, a load, and a purpose before the set begins. For example, you might perform partials in the lengthened portion of a seated leg curl or calf raise while keeping the same boundaries on every repetition.

Recent research makes an important distinction between partials at long muscle lengths, performed where the muscle is more lengthened, and partials in the shortened portion. A systematic review found that full ROM and some partials in the initial or lengthened portion can produce more growth than staying only in the final or shortened portion.

A 2026 trial also observed similar hypertrophy adaptations between full-ROM knee extensions and partials at long muscle lengths. That is an interesting finding, but it came from one exercise and a specific protocol; it does not make every half repetition superior.

The most useful rule: standardise first, progress second

If you want to know whether you improved, keep the same range criterion for several weeks.

Imagine a leg press:

  • week 1: 80 kg, 10 repetitions, lowering to a stable reference point;
  • week 2: 80 kg, 12 repetitions through the same range;
  • week 3: 85 kg, 9 repetitions through the same range.

That progression is easy to read. If you move 100 kg but greatly shorten the descent, however, you have shown that you can handle more load through a different range. You do not yet know whether you improved at the original exercise.

ROM can progress just like load. If you perform a controlled squat to a high box today and use a slightly lower box with the same stability in a few weeks, that is progress too.

How to choose your range in four common exercises

Squat and leg press

Lower as far as you can while keeping your feet supported, controlling the knees and pelvis, and returning without a bounce. The exact depth depends on your structure, mobility, variation, and goal. If adding weight shortens your descent without you planning it, the load has changed your technique.

Use a visible reference: box height, sled position, or a side-view video. You do not need to chase someone else’s squat; you need to repeat your own with a clear standard.

Chest press or bench press

Lower to a position you can control without the shoulders rolling forwards or the load bouncing. Complete the press along the intended path without turning the final section into a disorganised struggle.

If you want to improve your full press, perform most of your work through that range. Pin work and partials can serve a specific goal, but they do not automatically replace full-range practice.

Pulldown and row

Start from a repeatable position and finish the pull without rocking the torso to “gain” centimetres. A huge range created through momentum is not more complete; it is a different movement.

Reduce the load if you cannot reach the finish point without shrugging, losing control, or turning the exercise into a back extension.

Curls, extensions, and calf raises

Isolation exercises make it easy to fool yourself because you can move a lot of weight through very few degrees. Prioritise a controlled lengthened position and define how far the lifting phase should travel.

Programmed partials may fit here better than in a heavy squat: a machine or cable provides stability, and you can set clear boundaries. Even so, use them as a complement, not simply because the load no longer lets you complete the intended range.

A three-session audit to stop guessing

Apply this system to one exercise across three workouts:

  1. Choose two range references. These could be the starting seat position and the point the handle must reach.
  2. Film one set from the side, provided you can do so without disturbing anyone, or ask a coach to watch it.
  3. Record load, reps, RIR, and range. If the last two reps were partial, log them separately: 10 full + 2 partial.
  4. Repeat the setup next time. Do not change the seat, grip, load, and tempo simultaneously.
  5. Decide from the data. Add weight when you reach the top of your repetition range without shortening ROM or losing control.

When reducing the range makes sense

You are learning the exercise Use a controllable range and expand it gradually
Mobility or stability limits the position Adjust the variation, support, or load before forcing it
Pain appears in part of the movement Do not force through it; modify the exercise and seek an assessment if it persists
You need strength at a specific angle Programme partials with defined boundaries and a clear goal
You want to test lengthened partials Use a stable exercise and keep full ROM as your reference
Fatigue alone shortens the range End the set or log the partial reps separately

Temporarily reducing the range is not “cheating” when there is a reason and a progression. Cheating begins when the standard changes simply to make the log look better.

Three common mistakes

Adding weight before you own the range

More kilograms attract attention, but a shorter range can hide the fact that you have not yet controlled the previous load. Before adding weight, check that your final repetitions resemble the first ones.

Copying somebody else’s depth

Body proportions, mobility, and machine setup all change the movement. Use your own references and ask for help adapting the exercise to your situation.

Turning an advanced method into the foundation

Lengthened partials are an interesting tool, not a requirement or a magic shortcut. If your range still changes without you noticing, learning to standardise it will give you more value than chasing the latest trend.

Conclusion: make every repetition mean the same thing

A full, controlled range is a strong foundation for learning, building strength, and measuring progress. Partial repetitions can have a place when you choose the section, exercise, and goal before you begin. They should not simply appear because you loaded more than you can move with your usual technique.

Next time you train, do not ask only, “How much weight did I lift?” Ask: “Through what range, with what control, and compared with what?”
