Breathing and creating tension are not opposing actions: the key is coordinating them with the load and the moment of each repetition.

How to Breathe When Lifting Weights in Massanassa: Bracing, Effort and Dizziness

You start a squat, take a breath and suddenly wonder: should I let it out on the way down, on the way up or only after I finish? On a machine you may breathe without thinking, but a bar on your back makes your body want to become rigid. If you have ever finished a set feeling dizzy, it is understandable that the instructions online seem contradictory.

The contradiction usually disappears when you separate two ideas: breathing maintains ventilation; bracing creates tension around your trunk. They work together, but they are not exactly the same and you do not need to hold your breath through every repetition of your workout.

This guide from Alphafit Gym Massanassa gives you a simple pattern for most exercises, explains when a brief pause may be useful and shows you how to practise without turning breathing into one more complicated cue to memorise.

Breathing and bracing are not the same thing

An abdominal brace means tightening your trunk as if you were about to receive a push. It does not mean sucking in your stomach, pulling your navel towards your spine or squeezing only the muscles at the front. You want tension around your abdomen, sides and lower back while maintaining a position you can control.

Breathing supplies the air; your trunk muscles manage pressure and stiffness. You can maintain a moderate brace while slowly letting air out. You can also hold it for a very short portion of a demanding repetition. The right strategy depends on the load, the exercise, your experience and your health.

A review of the Valsalva manoeuvre during resistance exercise concluded that holding the breath increases intra-abdominal pressure and may contribute to trunk rigidity, but it also produces acute changes in the cardiovascular response. That does not make the manoeuvre good or bad for everyone. It makes it a specific tool, not the default pattern for every set.

The basic pattern for most of your sets

If you train with moderate loads on machines, cables, dumbbells or isolation exercises, start with this pattern:

  1. Breathe in during the easier portion or the controlled return.
  2. Create moderate abdominal tension before the effort.
  3. Breathe out through the difficult portion without emptying your lungs all at once.
  4. Take another breath before the next repetition.

Quick examples:

  • on a leg press, breathe in as you lower and out as you push;
  • on a chest press, breathe in as the handles return and out as you press them away;
  • on a lat pulldown, breathe in as you return the bar and out during the pull;
  • on a biceps curl, inhale as you lower and exhale as you lift.

You do not need to synchronise every millimetre. The useful reference is not reaching the hard part without air and not holding one breath for the whole set. When an exercise is light and stable, breathing can feel quite natural.

How to learn a 360-degree brace

Practise this without a bar or plates first. It takes less than two minutes.

  1. Stand with your knees unlocked and your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  2. Place one hand on your abdomen and the other on your side, just above your hip.
  3. Breathe in without raising your shoulders. Feel a gentle expansion forwards, into the sides and towards your back.
  4. Tighten your trunk as if you were about to receive a push, but do not hunch over.
  5. Let out a thin stream of air for two or three seconds while keeping some of that tension.
  6. Relax, breathe normally and repeat three times.

Then try the same pattern on a squat to a bench, a dowel hip hinge or a very light leg press. The aim is not to squeeze as hard as possible. It is to prove that you can create tension, move and breathe again without losing your position.

What changes on squats, deadlifts and heavy sets

A free squat, Romanian deadlift or bent-over row demands more stability than a seated curl. As the load rises, many people take a breath, brace and maintain both through the most demanding part of the movement. They then release the air and reset in a stable position.

The systematic review of internal pressures during high-intensity exercise found higher pressure values in the squat, deadlift and leg press than in exercises such as the bench press. It also recommends gradual adaptation before inexperienced people use high loads.

The practical lesson is not “always hold your breath”. It is this:

  • moderate load and a longer set: maintain enough brace and let air out in a controlled way;
  • a demanding repetition on a free-weight exercise: breathe in and brace before moving, then breathe again after the sticking point or at the end of the repetition;
  • a maximal or near-maximal load: do not improvise a Valsalva manoeuvre because you saw it in a video; learn the technique under supervision and as part of a genuine progression.

If you need to hold one breath through five repetitions, see spots or lose your position as you exhale, the strategy does not fit the set.

This table is a starting point, not a universal command. If coordinating the pattern makes your technique worse, lower the load and practise. Just as with progressive overload, add difficulty only when the previous step is repeatable.

Why you may feel dizzy after a set

Feeling dizzy does not prove that your “blood pressure dropped”, nor is it enough to diagnose the cause. It can occur in very different contexts: excessive effort, a long breath hold, standing up quickly, heat, insufficient recovery or a health issue that needs assessment.

A trial with novice lifters found that the Valsalva manoeuvre produced the highest blood pressure response compared with other breathing patterns. The ACSM also warns that holding your breath while lifting can result in very high blood pressure responses, dizziness or fainting—especially relevant when prescribing exercise for people with hypertension.

If you feel dizzy during a set:

  1. return the load to a safe support;
  2. sit down or steady yourself so you cannot fall;
  3. breathe normally and do not start another set straight away;
  4. tell gym staff if it does not resolve quickly;
  5. end the workout and seek medical assessment if the episode is severe, keeps happening or comes with chest pain, fainting, visual changes, unusual palpitations or disproportionate shortness of breath.

Do not try to “fix it” with extra salt, caffeine or more weight without knowing the cause.

Who should avoid improvising breath holds under load

If you have hypertension, cardiovascular disease, a history of fainting with exertion or another condition for which you have been given training limits, speak to your healthcare professional before using deliberate breath holds or very high loads. Strength training can be part of a healthy programme, but intensity and breathing need to fit your circumstances.

It is also sensible to seek technical guidance if you are pregnant, have pelvic-floor symptoms or have an eye condition that is sensitive to pressure changes. A general article cannot replace an individual assessment.

For everyone else, the principle remains conservative: continuous breathing and moderate bracing first; then, if the exercise and load require it, learn more specific strategies under supervision.

Four mistakes that make breathing harder

Sucking in instead of creating tension

Pulling your abdomen in may make you feel “set”, but it is not the same as expanding and tightening the trunk. Practise the 360-degree expansion before adding load.

Raising your shoulders as you inhale

An enormous breath that lifts your shoulders and ribs can change your position before you start. Take the air you need without turning the setup into a shrug.

Holding one breath through the whole set

Bracing does not require an endless breath hold. On multi-repetition sets, use stable positions to refresh your air and prepare for the next movement.

Copying a maximal lifting technique

What a powerlifter does on a limit attempt is not automatically right for a set of 12 on a leg press or for someone still learning. Your breathing should serve the task in front of you.

A two-session audit

Choose one stable exercise and another that demands more from your trunk. A machine chest press and a goblet squat work well.

Across two workouts:

  • use a load that leaves 3-4 repetitions in reserve;
  • record one set from the side if you can do so without disturbing anyone, or ask a coach to watch;
  • note when you breathe in, when you let air out and whether you lose tension;
  • check whether the final repetitions speed up, shorten or leave you gasping;
  • change only one thing in the next session.

Add this practice to your 10-minute strength warm-up. Two light rehearsals before the first working set usually teach you more than trying to fix your breathing when you are already at your limit.

Conclusion: enough tension, air at the right time

For most of your training, breathe on every repetition, create a moderate brace before the effort and let air out in a controlled way through the hard part. A brief pause can make sense on demanding free-weight movements, but you do not need to turn every set into a breath-holding test.

A good strategy leaves you stable and able to recover your breathing. If dizziness, pain or loss of control appears, secure the load and stop. That is not the moment to force another repetition.
